Biography:
Georg Pauli was a Swedish painter and writer who was active in Sweden, France and Italy. He began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm in the 1870s and then continued his studies at the Académie Julian *in Paris. He was strongly inspired by the French realist artists and outdoor painters, which came to characterize most of his art.

Pauli was very passionate and concerned about the creation and development of his artistic style. This took him on further journeys and in the 1880s he left for Italy. His desire was to deepen his knowledge of the monumental works and frescoes of the Renaissance. This significant period for Pauli laid the foundation for many distinctive murals he later created in Sweden.

Pauli was in France 1882 - 1886 and spent a period in the Scandinavian artist colony in Grez-sur-Loing outside Paris where the artist Jules Bastien-Lepage was a great source of inspiration for him. Naturalistic easel painting was then Pauli's main interest and studies of reality dominated his work. This auction's painting is representative of this time in Paul's art. The painting is done according to the traditions of naturalism with depictions of a large open landscape, a high horizon, thin details such as autumn leaves and a company that rests before their work - all this painted on site, a plein- air*.

In the work's composition you will find cuts that create a limited and focused view, which characterizes the 80's painting in France. Pauli is one of the artists who later introduced this in Swedish art. The size of the work speaks to Paul's interest in frescoes, which he began to develop already during his stay in Italy.

At the end of the 19th century, when Pauli returned to Sweden, he became active in monumental painting and carried out decoration and decoration work on several of Gothenburg and Stockholm's public buildings. The frescoes in the Gothenburg Museum (1895-96), the Opera's foyer in Stockholm (1898), the door tops in Prince Eugene's Waldemarsudde (1905), the Riksbank in Stockholm (1906), the Dramatic Theater's buffet (1908) and many more places where his works can be seen than today.
