NORMAN IVES
I knew that if I was going to launch an online gallery, that I would have to include a page dedicated to the genius of artist Norman Ives. Maybe it’s the blending of typography and art that appeals to me, a person with a degree in English and a book collection as big as my art collection. Something about his art speaks to me, it’s as simple as that. Nothing on this page is for sale, it is simply here to highlight items that I have in my personal collection, for others to see and enjoy. - Bill Stevens
Norman Ives (1923–1978) was an American artist celebrated for his pioneering work in geometric abstraction and printmaking. He was part of the first graphic design class at Yale University, first learning from and then later working with Josef Albers. Throughout his career, Ives explored the intersection of art and technology, utilizing various mediums such as serigraphy, lithography, and collage to create intricate compositions characterized by bold colors and dynamic geometric shapes. His artistic vision was deeply influenced by the Bauhaus movement and Concrete art, leading to the creation of visually stimulating and intellectually engaging artworks. Ives' innovative approach to printmaking and his commitment to exploring the formal qualities of geometric abstraction cemented his legacy as a significant figure in 20th-century American art.
